APM Indie Artists Live: Love Sophie, Gives Dream Pop a Gen Z Spin

APM Indie Artists Live: Love Sophie
Love Sophie performs "Heart Stops."

Not everyone can pull off a proper moody, dreamy, and ethereal dream pop. Many have tried, and many have failed because this genre requires a specific quality of songwriting—think simple progressions but rich, melancholic chords featuring major sevenths and ninths—and a distinct vocal style—breathy and angelic, yet tinged with sadness. Combine these elements with guitar tones drenched in chorus and reverb, and you get the signature sensitivity of dream pop. The genre, which gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s, is now being fully embraced by Gen Z, thanks to brilliant new artists like Love, Sophie.

Love, Sophie began her musical journey in her native Denver, Colorado, and recently moved to Los Angeles to reach a broader audience. Her self-titled EP, released under APM Music’s artist-driven label Kinetik, is poised to be one of the standout releases of 2024.

During a recent visit to APM Music’s headquarters, she delivered a stunning, stripped-down performance of her song “Heart Stops.”
