Music is fascinating in a way that it can be re-arranged and reworked yet maintains its very essence. One cannot add new layers of thick paint to Guernica and still see it as the same Picasso masterpiece nor can one slip in new verses to "The Road Not Taken" and still read the same way as Robert Frost intended it to be read. "Yesterday," by The Beatles, however, has been made into various genres from punk to EDM to metal yet can still be identified as the same song written by a young Paul McCartney at the height of Beatlemania. This perceived pliability of music also the spirit of Jazz, which improvises on existing music to create a new form but keeping the essence of the original piece. John Coltrane’s version of “My Favorite Things” from the hit movie musical The Sound of Music comes to mind.
It is in the spirit of creativity that Universal Production Music’s Bruton library gave their contemporary pop tracks a classical makeover fit for a royal banquet. The result is a remarkable album entitled, Quartet Pop.
Recorded at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios in London, Quartet Pop is made up of five main tracks with multiple versions perfect for modern scenes of traditional pleasures or period dramas. The Pop tracks come mostly from UPM's artist-driven labels such as Radar and Hooked, and to hear them uniquely is a delight.
