Music is a strange thing, perhaps the strangest amongst all the artforms for it conjures up feelings with every note and every beat. These feelings are often familiar but sometimes completely alien, yet almost always, it is attached to a story that is deeply personal. Vinay Kaushal is a master of this art. With every reverb and delay-laden note from his guitar, he creates an atmosphere that allows for a universe of stories to unfold like interstellar molecular clouds giving birth to stars that will eventually light up the entire cosmos. This magical phenomenon is clear in his album Skyscapes: Ambient Guitar World, released by Chapel of Rock and now available for sync through APM Music.
In this episode of Sound Screen, we caught up with Vinay to talk about his life, career, and his album. Listen now.
About Vinay Kaushal
Indian guitarist and composer Vinay Kaushal has built a career on refusing to stay in one musical lane. Blending jazz, rock, pop, and cinematic influences, his music feels both globally minded and deeply personal.
Kaushal’s musical roots trace back to childhood, surrounded by Indian classical sounds, before he fell in love with the guitar as a teenager. That early mix of rhythm and melody still shapes his playing today, where Western guitar styles meet an instinctive feel for groove and mood. His studies at Musicians Institute in Hollywood further widened his palette, helping him craft a sound that moves easily between genres.
His 2018 debut album, Naked on a Train, introduced listeners to his expressive instrumental style, while later singles, including collaborations with artists like Shakthisree Gopalan, which show his knack for writing memorable songs as well as guitar-driven pieces. Whether it’s a laid-back jazz vibe or a more cinematic atmosphere, Kaushal’s music tends to stick with you long after the track ends.
Beyond his solo work, Kaushal is also an active composer and producer, creating music for film, television, and global production music libraries. He performs regularly, collaborates across scenes, and runs workshops and clinics, sharing his experience with younger musicians across India.
