Back in the mid-2000s, York’s own Elliot Minor carved out a space in the UK rock scene with a sound that was equal parts catchy pop hooks and sweeping classical flourishes. Led by lead singer Alex Davies, the band stood out for its orchestral leanings—strings, piano, and vocal harmonies woven into alt-rock anthems that quickly found their way up the charts. Their self-titled debut landed at No. 6 on the UK Albums Chart in 2008, thanks to tracks like “Parallel Worlds” and “Jessica.”

Now, Alex is ready to bring his brand of rock, made famous by Elliot Minor, into the world of sync with an album entitled, Anthemic Rock: Riffs of Rebellion. The ten-track album was launched by Bibliotheque’s Input Output label and is now available for licensing through APM Music.

And that’s not all. After a long hiatus, Elliot Minor is back in a big way. The band recently released “How Does It Feel,” their first single in over a decade, and embarked on a sold-out UK tour, including a spot at Download Festival, proving the appetite for their dramatic, orchestral rock never really went away.

Classically trained and obsessed with film scores since his teens, Alex always infused Elliot Minor’s music with cinematic energy. But when the band took a step back, he shifted his focus fully into composition. Under the names Wide Eyed and Goldbæk, he’s built a thriving career writing contemporary classical music that’s racked up more than 100 million streams.

Davies’s work hasn’t stayed confined to streaming platforms either. He’s written and arranged for artists like Kodaline and Frances, and in 2024 he scored episodes of the BBC drama Silent Witness alongside BAFTA-nominated composer Vince Pope. It’s a move that feels like a natural extension of the symphonic textures he brought to Elliot Minor’s early hits.

For Davies, the leap from rock lead singer to composer isn’t so much a departure as a return to his roots.

“I was obsessed with John Williams’s film scores at the age of twelve,” he’s said, and his lifelong interest in Renaissance harmonies and choral music continues to shape the way he writes. “
